Status: 30 September 2026. Independently formulated instructions based on the linked manufacturer assistance. Desktop menu paths refer to Windows; language, build, and brokers may differ. Operating processes were not practically taken down here with a real brokerage account. Exercises are intended for a demo account.

1. Installing the Right Platform

MT4 is a trade frontend. Your trading account, the instruments offered and the terms of the contract belong to the broker. Therefore, prepare platform version, account number, exact server name and confirmation whether it is a demo or live account. A community login does not replace this information.

Open this Official download portal or the previously verified download of your broker. Select MetaTrader 4 explicitly: MT5 is also offered on the manufacturer portal. For macOS and Linux, use the separate paths linked there; extensions may depend on the environment.

[DOWNLOAD4][INSTALL4][MAC4]
  1. Start the installer and record the intended installation location. Name several installations clearly.
  2. After launch under Help → Write down the product version and build.
  3. Use a separate demo account for the following exercises. Not yet enabling automation or copy services.

2. Assign account and server

Select the account in the navigator or open “Login to Trade Account”. Enter the account number, password and the associated server. Demo and live can be on different servers. A saved account entry alone does not say that there is currently a connection.

[NAV4]

After login, check the account name, server and fresh courses. If there is no connection, stop the operating attempt and go to Error diagnosis. For access data use only the verified broker contact; passwords do not belong in support screenshots.

An investor access is intended for observation. Whether a transaction fails due to lack of trading rights must be checked by broker access separately from a market or execution problem.

3. Organise the workspace

SectionTaskYour control question
Market overviewSymbols, Bid/Ask and specificationsIs this the right instrument, including suffix?
NavigatorAccounts, indicators, EAs and scriptsWhich account and which program are active?
ChartPrice presentation and analysisWhich period and which pricing basis are visible?
Terminal terminalTrade, History and ProtocolsIs the order only placed or already executed?
[UI4]

Via View, you will display missing windows again. First, open only an icon and a chart. A quiet setup facilitates the assignment of price, trade dialogue and position.

4. Read the specification before the order dialog

In the market overview, open the context menu of the symbol and its specification. Check contract size, minimum volume and step, price points, trading hours, and reported funding. Identical denominations are not evidence of identical contracts. Search for non-shown icons via the icon selection.

[WATCH4]

For the practice account, write down a small instrument card: full icon name, unit, minimum volume, step size, account currency and trading time. In case of unclear information, have the specification confirmed in writing at the broker. A lot is not a everywhere identical sum of money.

5. Charts, indicators and templates

Open chart from the market overview, select bar, candle or line view and set the time frame. Use chart properties for colors and the ask line; templates preserve a chart design, profiles a work arrangement. Indicators and drawing objects are different tools.

[CHARTS4]

Exercise: Create two views of the same instrument, one short-term and one longer. Save a neutral template with highly recognizable trading levels. In the indicator, document its parameters instead of just its name. A marked price level does not trigger an order.

In MT4, the historical chart representation is basically bid-based. A short-stop can be achieved by Ask, although the visible bid candle does not touch the level. The current Ask line does not complement a complete historical Ask series.

[ORDERS4]

6. Place an order deliberately

  1. Select icon in the context menu and open “New Order”.
  2. In the dialog check symbol and volume. Control Stop Loss and Take Profit as concrete price levels.
  3. Choose between immediate market order and pending order. In the case of pending, specify the type, entry price and, if applicable, expiration.
  4. Before sending direction, unit and account read again. Leave one-click trading off for the learning phase.
  5. After sending result and terminal check; ticket, actual price and time note.

MT4 knows the pending types Buy Limit, Sell Limit, Buy Stop and Sell Stop. Limits are aimed at an entry on the more favorable side of the current price; stops at an entry after reaching a level above or below. The execution mode depends on the symbol.

[ORDERS4]

A confirmed order is not yet a guarantee of a certain execution. A pending order can become active later. The differences between order, processing and risk assumption are shown by the Order expiration.

7. Managing positions and pending orders

Open the context menu of the specific ticket and select Change, Close or – in the case of an unexecuted pending order – Delete. Then check the remaining position or the open order list. Closing a chart window does not end a position.

Do not confuse a new counterorder with the targeted closure of the existing ticket. How partial sales, stops and multiple positions work together explains the Position management for MT4 and MT5.

8. EAs and Strategy Testers

MT4 uses MQL4 programs. An EA is part of the ongoing terminal operation and its installation must be distinguished from its trade clearance. Follow them. EA Guide and start with the trade clearance off.

[EA4]

In the strategy tester, first record EA, symbol, time period, data model and parameters. First run a single comprehensible test before you optimize many parameters. The MT4 tester settings document various modelling methods; a good historical curve is not yet proof of a viable live result.

[TEST4]

Our working rule: test result, demo observation and live execution in separate protocols. Make changes only individually so that their effect remains visible.

9. Reports and a repeatable routine

After the exercise Secure history and reports. In addition, note which action was intended. A screenshot of the balance does not explain how it was created.

Before each session: check correct account, fresh courses, correct icons, running programs and open orders. After each session: Count open positions and pending orders, check automatic services and secure protocols. In the event of a connection interruption, do not blindly resend an order.
